The Cause of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease
In some people the lower esophageal sphincter will remain slightly open. Contents of the stomach can then pass back up through into the esophagus. This can cause acid reflux and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease. There are however other things that make GERD more likely to occur when you have a weak esophageal sphincter. These things I have listed for your reference below.

Heavy intake of alcohol can cause GERD, as can maintaining a diet high in fat. Pregnancy is also a common cause of GERD. This is because while a woman is pregnant hormones levels change, one in which creates more acid.
Being overweight and smoking heavily are also causes of GERD.
As well as the above causes of GERD, there are certain foods that can cause GERD to occur. Some of which I have listed for you.

Citrus fruits
Chocolate
Caffeine
Garlic and Onions
Spicy Foods
Tomato based foods

Citrus fruits have the ability to cause GERD as they are full of acid. It is the acid that becomes the reflux.

Other than the above mentioned causes of GERD, you will find there are a few more causes which you can monitor yourself as well. Laying down as soon as you have finished eating can also be a cause of GERD. Eating large meals is another cause of GERD.
