Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease is often referred to as GERD. Simply because 'gastroesophageal reflux disease' is a bit of a mouthful for anyone to say. However, gastroesophageal Reflux disease (GERD) can be recognized in infants. A high percentage of infants are actually born with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Gastroesophageal reflux disease in infants is therefore quite common. Most infants will grow out of gastroesophageal reflux disease or acid reflux by the time they reach their first birthday, if not sooner. GERD can be quite painful to an infant, as can acid reflux. Continuous acid reflux in an infant left untreated can make GERD become more severe. So naturally if your infant seems to be in pain and is showing signs or symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease, you should act on it immediately and try to find a form of relief for your infant. As you have already learned with what I have mentioned above, infants can suffer from acid reflux and GERD, and often do. It is very common for an infant to suffer from acid reflux. There are symptoms and signs for you to recognize in your infant of them possibly suffering from acid reflux.

You may find that your infant is having problems with their sleeping patterns. Acid reflux and GERD can and will cause pain, and often this pain can be very severe. The pain that is associated with acid reflux and GERD will be situated behind the breastbone in the chest region. This pain can cause a lot of hurt and discomfort in your infant, and they most certainly will not be able to sleep if they are at the time experiencing such pain from having acid reflux.

You may also observe your infant belching or burping a great deal. This is also a possible symptom of acid reflux and GERD. You infant may not be interested in feeding times, or their appetite may be lessened. Once again, these are symptoms of your infant possibly having acid reflux or GERD.

There are a few other symptoms you may recognize in your infant that relates to acid reflux. Your infant may seem to have a constant cough or might not be keeping any milk down. These are also symptoms of acid reflux being present in your infant. Vomiting is another symptom of acid reflux being present.

As you can see there are a few symptoms you can recognize in your infant that may very well point to acid reflux. So be observant and learn how you can prevent your infant from suffering from acid reflux, or in the very least, learn how you can help alleviate the symptoms of acid reflux in your infant.

The most common of things for you to do for the benefit of your infant can be as follows:
Keep your infant sitting upright for a short while after feeding and 'wind' or 'burp' them. Simply gently rub your infants back.
Never lay your infant flat on his or her back immediately after feeding.
If you breastfeed, watch what you yourself are including in your daily diet.

If you feel your infant is suffering from acid reflux all of the time and you cannot find a way to relieve it, I suggest you schedule an appointment with your family doctor and get your infant assessed. He or she will then be able to advise you on what to do next.
