Acid Reflux In Baby - Baby Acid Reflux

By Leeanne Utiger
We all know that adults can experience acid reflux or heartburn. It is also a fact that babies too, even newborn babies can also suffer from acid reflux, or GERD. GERD is otherwise known as Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, which is in fact acid reflux. So when you hear of a parent talking about their newborn baby suffering from GERD, it is in fact acid reflux they are referring to.

GERD or acid reflux as I have already mentioned most will know it by, can affect many babies, even newborns, often up till they are of 1 year of age. Often GERD or acid reflux in babies can be overlooked. However it is common for newborn and older babies to suffer from GERD and acid reflux. Acid reflux and GERD in babies can cause vomiting, coughing and even more severe things, such as respiratory problems. If you have a baby who appears to suffer from GERD regularly, then I suggest you schedule an appointment with your local or family doctor and have your baby examined immediately. Acid reflux can be painful for an adult, so imagine how much pain newborn babies will be in when they have acid reflux.

Babies that suffer from GERD should be burped during each feeding time. This includes all babies that are not only breast fed, but also bottle fed. It is also wise to keep babies that experience acid reflux/GERD in an upright position for at least half an hour after feeding. This will help alleviate any acid reflux from happening or preventing acid reflux entirely.

If you have to visit your doctor for advice, you will soon learn what foods to avoid, so you can prevent GERD from occurring in an older baby also.

To Prevent GERD and Acid Reflux In Babies and Newborn Babies
The foods I am going to mention in this segment of the article will be the foods that you should steer clear of if you want to prevent your baby from suffering from GERD or acid reflux. The foods to stay away from in prevention of GERD are as follows:

Caffeine drinks (such as sodas and coffee)
Peppermints and chocolate
Spicy foods (curries, Mexican and even pizza)
Acidic foods (oranges, lemons, tomatoes)
Fatty and fried foods

None of the foods above make it any easier on your baby, especially if you are breast feeding. Of course what you eat when you bottle feed is not directly going to affect babies. So if you do breast feed, be very aware of these types of foods. What you eat could make all the difference to whether babies experience GERD/Acid Reflux or not.

Medication can be prescribed for babies who suffer from GERD, simply to help you relieve the pain and symptoms babies have from such a condition. You simply must not ignore GERD/Acid reflux in babies. In some cases if the GERD or Acid Reflux is continuous and extremely severe, a local or family doctor may advise surgery for babies. This obviously is for very severe cases of GERD and Acid Reflux, and is not recommended lightly.

If you have done all you can to prevent your baby from experiencing acid reflux, and yet your baby seems to be still suffering from acid reflux/GERD, then seek medical attention as soon as you possibly can.

Newborn babies and older babies need to be kept as comfortable as they possibly can be. Any pain will cause discomfort and therefore make for an unsettled baby. Babies who suffer from GERD, then in turn can provide you with little sleep also. This is also not healthy for either you or your baby.
